In academic terms, Wales can be thought of as the poor relation of the United Kingdom. The history of Northern Ireland means that it will always be the object of international attention. Scotland’s direct debate of independence provides a ready-made lens itself for researchers. The sheer size of England means that, as Henderson (2023) says, for many its importance simply speaks for itself. Wales, by contrast, has no such obvious calling card. Yet, as the papers in this volume demonstrate, there is much in terms of policy innovation, political preferences, economic possibilities and constitutional choices which speak to an audience far wider than Wales itself.
